Bonsai refers to the art of aesthetic miniaturization of trees by growing them in containers. The cultivation of bonsai trees requires elaborate techniques for shaping, watering, and repotting the trees in different kinds of containers. The beginning of the history of bonsai is traced back 2000 years to the Han Dynasty. Now it is very prevalent in China, Japan, Korea, and Vietnam. The oldest known living bonsai collection can be found at Happo-en, a private garden, in Tokyo, Japan. Some of the bonsai kept there are as old as 800 years. Bonsai can be created from almost any plant. Bonsai remain small through careful pot confinement and through crown and root pruning. Cultivators sometimes simulate age and maturity.
